When All is Natural

In this this 12" x 16" acrylic on canvas board dated 2022 and signed (probably accidentally and rather humorously) "Merle," Locke paints his familiar horse and rider against a blue, green and yellow background.

Painted while he was hospitalized, the piece is not perfect but represents some amazing perseverance as the artist kept painting through a serious illness. Locke always leaves something unfinished; in this work, one dragonfly is only partially sketched.

Dragonflies and stars surround a lance bearer on a spotted horse in a dreamlike scene.
