The original ink and acrylic on antique ledger paper, signed Merle Locke OLA and dated 2016, is a beautiful and charming example of traditional Native American ledger art. Approximately 14.5"x6".

Locke uses ledger paper #334 dated December 19, 1898 from a Black Hills grocery store as a reminder of that terrible time in Native American history. Native artists have continued to use ledger paper, making it a tradition. Locke's art honors the memories of his ancestors in part out of necessity, as art supplies still do not come easily on the Reservation.

In this example from his iconic Horse and Rider series, Locke depicts a beautifully dressed rider with eagle spirit and a tipi in the background.
